What is an Automatic Drain Valve

Automatic drain valves remove water and oil lubricants mixtures accumulated at the bottom of air compressor systems, which reduce the possibility of rust and damage to your equipment.

When talking about compressed air, water and managing condensate have to come up. You can't really talk about it without talking about drain valves for clean, dry air. Liquid buildup is important to discuss because it affects how well the air compressor system runs.

How Does It Work?

It works by letting water flow to the valve's reservoir. When the liquid hits a point where the float comes off, it sends air pressure to the piston, opening the ball valve.

Motorized valves can also be wired to sensors so they work as zero-loss drains.

Automatic vs. Manual Drain Valve: What's the Difference?

The pump produces moisture that goes into the tank and settles at the bottom where the manual drain is located. Manual Drain Valves need to be opened daily to let water and other liquids out.

If the tanks are not drained on a daily basis it will result in liquid accumulating at the bottom in large volumes. This will reduce the performance and capacity of an Air Compressor

To resolve this concern, Automatic Drain Valves can be installed to handle this task as needed to reduce the possibility of rust and other damage to your equipment.

Things to consider before buying

When buying a Drain Valve you have to consider a few things such as Thread Size for a perfect fit and you can use a reducer if needed.

Another thing to consider is Discharge Time which is how long it stays open to drain and Internal Time which is how often it would need to open. A good Discharge time is less than 10 seconds. A good internal time is between 30-45 seconds or so.

The last thing to consider is making sure that the material is strong enough and will not rust easily such as Brass or Stainless steel.

Last but not least is to ensure that you install the drain at the lowest spot at the bottom of your tank.

They are well suited for small to medium sized compressed air systems. Most electronic drain valves let you set the drain to come on once every 10 seconds to 45 minutes and remain open for 0.10 to 10 seconds.
